After Jack Leach was ruled out of the five-match series with a back stress fracture, the off-spinning all-rounder, who left the format after the 2021 summer, disclosed to cricket news that the England management had contacted him to respond to a mayday call.
Moeen, 35, has accumulated 67 Test caps and has scored 2914 runs and 195 wickets at an average of 36.66 in those games. If Moeen declines the offer this time, consideration will be given to fellow spinning all-rounders Will Jacks, Rehan Ahmed, and Liam Livingstone, who departed that tour after suffering a knee injury in the first Test and both got five-wicket hauls in Pakistan. Liam Dawson of Hampshire, a left-arm spinner and capable hitter, is another outside chance.
A former England captain, Alastair Cook, stated as much on BBC Radio 5 Live. He might perform the same tasks as Jack Leach but he is a better hitter.
